Pool Protection in Winter

Wondering how to protect your pool in winter?

In summer, everything seems simpler when it comes to pool maintenance and cleaning. But what do we do as winter approaches?

Whether the winter in your area is harsh or mild, you need to pay attention to protecting your pool.

In this article, we will present ways to protect your pool as it should be.

*Remember: If you have a pool cover, it is easier to protect and keep your pool clean.

Wondering how to achieve this? Follow the steps below:

Pool Cleaning
Before covering your pool with a protective cover, make sure you have cleaned it with the necessary chemicals. Even if you are not using it, it is essential to take care of it. This way, you will avoid the formation of algae in the water, and you won’t have to spend more money and effort cleaning it in the spring. It’s also good to clean the surfaces with a special brush and a brush for corners.

Reduce Water Level
You need to reduce the water level to 2/3 of the pool so that it does not cover the skimmers. This ensures that they won’t freeze in case of frost. However, be careful not to completely empty the pool, as this can have disastrous consequences for the bottom. If you want to prevent water freezing, try placing plastic containers or pieces of wood in the water to prevent ice formation.

Lower Pool Temperature
Before any other action, let the pool temperature drop below 17°C. The low temperature helps prevent water pollution and the growth of microorganisms.

Pool Covering
The cover prevents leaves and debris from entering the pool from the air and rain. So, when you open it, you won’t have the extra burden of cleaning them. However, it’s a good idea to check from time to time to see if anything has passed underneath that might cause contamination in the water.

*If you don’t have a cover for the pool, it’s okay. You can still protect it with regular care.

Proper Cleaning
It’s recommended to check the chemical balance once a month, maintaining it at the right level. The indicative pH values are 7.2-7.4. However, due to the low water temperature, there is no fear of microorganism growth.

Regular Cleaning
The fact that your pool will be exposed to weather conditions increases the need for frequent cleaning. Remove leaves and debris that enter the pool through the air with a net. It is also necessary to reinforce the water with liquid chlorine to maintain it at the desired levels. Check it every 15 days and take the necessary actions. Don’t forget to clean the filters and skimmer baskets for proper water circulation.

A pool provides wonderful moments of relaxation and fun. To continue enjoying it carefree, you must take care of it all year round. Follow our advice and protect it even in winter. This way, you won’t have problems in the spring when you need to prepare it for the summer.
